Okay people… here we go. The very first step of this tutorial is to draw the base sketches for the main idea about a fictional robotic character. I want you to know something about the beginning of this tutorial..A few days ago my sister had asked me if I can color one of her hand drawings..I said ..Let me see them first’….and I looked at her drawings carefully..sketches were looking great!
src="http://tuts.3d2dizayn.com/wp-includes/images/smilies/icon_biggrin.gif" style="background-attachment: initial; background-clip: initial; background-color: transparent; background-image: initial; background-origin: initial; background-position: initial initial; background-repeat: initial initial; border-bottom-width: 0px; border-color: initial; border-left-width: 0px; border-right-width: 0px; border-style: initial; border-top-width: 0px; font-size: 13px; margin-bottom: 0px; margin-left: 0px; margin-right: 0px; margin-top: 0px; outline-color: initial; outline-style: initial; outline-width: 0px; padding-bottom: 0px; padding-left: 0px; padding-right: 0px; padding-top: 0px; vertical-align: baseline;" /> So I accepted to color one of them or draw a robot like her sketches… and said her that I’m going to use it for one of my tutorials.. So, we did come to an agreement! Here, these are my sister’s sketches. The story does belong to my little brother also…As you can see in the pictures, my sister starts with some quick sketches.. And I bet the one who knows not much about drawing (like anatomy, perspective etc.) can manage drawing some quick sketches like these.
Story: (The robot who changes the mask!) written by my younger brother
I send him my thanks.
This will be the story of our robots. In the future….in the World of the Robots, where the two kind of robots exist….Leomaros and Birmaros…(The Leo Masked ones and the Bird Masked ones)…In those days both kind were living together..how a greats harmony it was! They were managed by a Great Kingro…Kingro had brang peace in their world.. But the evil was still existing in someones hearts! One Day some Leo’s provoked their kinds…And their acts led to a great chaos! A big war happened..In that war the Great Kingro was dead..And The World halved, the Land of Birmaros…And the Land of Leomaros..both had their own civilizations! But Leomaro’s wanted more land..and more land! And wanted to start a new fight again…But there was a Leomaro who wanted to fight not…And it was this robot! The robot who changes the mask!
A quick and important reminding: Before drawing the sketches..figure out the story, this is very important..You bet, it will let you to obtain more time! After figuring out what the story is..and knowing about colors…we can start the main coloring and paint process..And however, my tutorial won’t show you how to draw the sketch..but will teach you how to paint the SKETCH OF A COOL ROBOT!
Now below paintings are totally based sketches and they looks nice….the sketches…….hmmm I just trying to see what will come out from sketches…. I often draw or paint a lot of sketches to represent a concept but then I realized that I was just using one sketch (Anyway you always have to draw a few sketches to decide which one is the best)
Step 1: First of all, Let us open a new document (800 width and 1350 height or there about… and 72 dpi) Now draw a preliminary sketch. (Ctrl+N or File > New). For now… it is 72 dpi, but after changing the resolution to 300 dpi (without re-sampling image) you will be able to print it on an A3 format with a pretty good quality. I decided to draw a different character for my tutorial . Here is my sketch…it looks different. Also, I am looking my sister‘s sketches also. Those sketches are the main idea but we are not using those ones for this 2d painting tutorial.
Step2: Now you may draw your sketch. It does have not to be perfect, you will go over it later. Choose the brush tool… At a low size…around medium opacity…Begin with sketching the outline. No need to make it look so detailed. Just draw enough to create the general shape. Then click on the Brush Tool (B) and choose a very thin but hard brush. As you know, soft brushes are the very blurry ones and hard brushes look more solid. Note that; you can choose any color for your brush… because we’ll also go over it with an other layer…shortly.
Step 3: Create a new layer…Set the sketch layer properties to “multiply, so you‘ll be able to see the before layer while you painting… Name the new layer as “Robot Color“… I‘m choosing the blue for the main color…Pick the base of your skin color and paint with a new layer onto the sketch layer. Now we’re ready to paint. There are no need to go into the details. Try to see the image as a whole in this step. Make sure the layer of the color selected..not the layer of the sketch. We are going to use a large brush to put some general shading on the overall shape of the head and the neck. As you can see in the image below… nothing is detailed at this point.
Step 4: Now,we selected colors, we can begin to to color the robot. Don’t worry about going out of the lines. That will be cleaned up later on. Once you have done we can begin shading. One more tip: Your sketches don’t have to have clean and smooth lines..Let’s make it super detailed not..Because all the lines will be covered up. Make sure the “Robot color” layer is selected not the sketch layer
Using the large brush, do some general shading for the overall shape of the robot and the background coloring. These are my colors selection…. but I can change them later… don’t decide about colors.
Step 5: Now it is time to clean up! Use the eraser tool to erase all the access metal body which is touching to the background… Choose a small soft brush and set it to 40% or 30%. I go around with my brush tool that are going to be highly shaded. Start to add a new layer to add shades and shadows…. A reminding; the shadows don’t have to be the darker version of the base color..it could be other colors too.
Step 6: We are now beginning to add some main details for the character…You don’t have to over detail everything for now. I just add some basic detail for my character at this step. Using a smaller brush, I begin adding smaller paint strokes to add detail and to blend the colors together…then I took a smaller brush and a darker opacity. I traced around the edges but also defined some of the pencil shading around the robot. Now this looks pretty good but it needs more work. I continue to add more details and opening some new layers when I need.
Step 7: While I’m working on the colors, I tried to figure out the main light… Where the light will come from? What its color will be? There is a green light at the background and there is an other color on the front…..Now those general details are almost fixed..We’ll begin a very detailed painting process and we’ll use a standart brush but we’ll going to change some settings when we are using the brush….
Step 8: And in this step I would like to change the size of my file because I’ll add more details… so I’ll be in need of a bigger file size. I wish my file had more bigger size because at this stage I think I can not make a vey detailed painting…So now I’m opening the Image size… And setting the size to 3000×4029…
Step 9: And now use the burn tool a few times to darken the top of the arm. Brush settings must be 50%, soft round brush. And use the dodge tool to add shine along the bottom of the eyes. Finish adding light green as desires and create a new layer for shadow.
Step 10: Using these steps, you can paint as many details as possible. Do not forget to paint lights and shadows as well. If you want to use a different color you can attach another layer and do more shading. And when I do want to add some more darkness on the painting I chose multiply from here.
Step 11: Now it’s time for the details. We are going to detail the character’s hair. Reminding; start with a new layer for the details. Always pay attention to lighting. Keep in mind the direction of the hair is falling…After running through a few possibilities, I decided on the one shown. . And for the shadow you shall use the same color but 50% will do good .Try not to lift your pen too much. Too many stroke will destroy the smooth gradient effect which we are trying to archieve.
Step 12: We are now beginning to detail the hair. A reminding; pay attention to your layers and make sure they do not clash with the body . You can lock or hide all the layers except the hair layer. I use different layers for each part of the body… it is more easier that way to keep them separated… so you don’t have to erase when you go over a line. Here I have added some more stronger highlights to it‘s hair and now paint some little details.
Step 13: Now I am going to work on textures. You can use photographs to apply textures on your painting. Textures are what makes this piece in the end….adding several different kind of textures to have them applied to only certain areas. Create a new layer above the color layer with the name “tex_robo” Then we are opening a new texture image..After that we are copying and pasting it into my “tex_robo” layer. Then set the layer mode to Overlay as you can see in the screenshot… Here you can see through and how the texture looks..now change the layer opacity properly….. have it at 20% or less…
Step 14: Now textures do look good. The shadows layer is above all other layers in this case. The final steps in finishing my character illustration was the detailing and further texturing process. I created new layers and put more detail on to my character. Here pay attention the background details and the layer… for the background I started adding smaller details, such as glowing dots and , and fancy shadows . I decided that I wanted some more glowing parts. Well now I think I basically done with the robot at this point. And once you have done color and the shading you should get something like this.
Conclusion
And here…this is the result.. an original robot!.. Does look pretty cool, does it not? Well…yes..:D this tutorial ends here.. Of course there are many other ways to get the similar result..But this is the way how I usually work on the coloring of a 2d project..
I hope this tutorial would be very useful for you..Very glad to help..And you know.. it would be very nice to getting some comments from the one who studied this tutorial
…Okay, that’s it for today….Always keep practicing…Always use your imagination and your own style.. Happy drawings! Good Luck to all of you! Salut à bientôt
